Sparkes Elected to ACT Board

James Sparkes has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Association of Council Members and Trustees of the State University of New York (ACT). Sparkes will serve a three year term as a Director of ACT, the statewide representative organization of SUNY Trustees and Council Members. Sparkes is a member of the Upstate Medical University Council by appointment of the New York Governor.

He is a partner at Sugarman Law Firm and concentrates on business and commercial real estate transactions.

Sugarman Law Firm Recruiting Teams for Ski Race to Benefit Make-A-Wish

Sugarman Law Firm is recruiting teams for the Make-A-Wish Fun Run to be held at Noon, Sunday, March 7th at Labrador Mountain. The event is sponsored by Sugarman and all proceeds benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation of CNY. Teams will consist of five people of any age - all female, all male or a mix. Single entries will be put on a team. Registration fee is $35 per person - which covers registration fee and an all-day lift ticket.

The race will be on the NASTAR Course, GS, best of two runs. Scoring will be by NASTAR handicap.

McGraw Attends National Estate Planners Conference

Charlene McGraw, Managing Partner of the Trusts, Estates & Elder Law Department at Sugarman Law Firm, recently attended the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils (NAEPC) and the NAEPC Foundation 46th Annual Conference on Amelia Island, Florida. The NAEPC conference featured two days of advanced continuing education focused on various estate planning professions and disciplines.

McGraw provides clients with expansive legal services related to estate and transfer tax planning, ranging from preparing simple wills to the preparation and administration of complex trusts. She is an experienced trial attorney and litigator whose career has touched on all issues related to estates and will disputes, and has established particular expertise as a legal advisor to seniors.

Sutter Speaks at American Institute of Architects Meeting in Buffalo

Brian Sutter was a guest lecturer at the AIA Buffalo/Western New York - a chapter of the American Institute of Architects, on September 18, 2009. Sutter spoke on the topic of indemnification clauses. Sutter is a partner at Sugarman Law Firm and specializes in advising and representing licensed professionals - architects, engineers, surveyors, physicians and health care providers.

Sugarman Team Prepares MOST Lawn for Future Park

Sugarman Law Firm has partnered with the MOST and City of Syracuse to create a park for local residents to enjoy on the side lawn of the museum. The park will include new trees, benches and more. On Friday, Sugarman employees took to the lawn to begin the first phase of the park development process. The team power washed the sidewalk, trimmed bushes, spread mulch and weeded the lawn. More improvements to come!

Sugarman Officially Opens Armory Square Office

Sugarman Law Firm officially opened their new offices in Armory Square at a special ceremony attended by area legislators, business and community leaders and its employees. Sugarman, which is currently celebrating its 100th anniversary, gave a gift to the community at the event. It will partner with the MOST and the City of Syracuse to create a park for downtown residents and workers on the spacious side lawn of the MOST - including flowers, trees and park benches. Firm Hosts Golf Tournament For Make-A-Wish

Sugarman Law Firm partnered with the Auburn Doubledays to host its 2nd annual golf tournament to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation of CNY. The tournament raised enough money for the firm to grant a wish for a child in Cayuga County. The Firm has granted two other wishes in the Auburn area in the past two years. Laura Spring will speak at the July 22, 2009 Women Ties (Women Together Inspiring Entrepreneurial Sucess) meeting. She will discuss "Intellectual Property Issues and Rights to Protect Your Business." Spring's lecture will help women entrepreneurs better understand the basics of trademark and copyright law, discuss why trademark protection is needed, discuss the enforcement of trademarks, and highlight the interaction with Web sites, domain names, and their protection.

Sugarman Prepares For Move To New GREEN Home!

The finishing touches are underway at Sugarman Law Firm's new green headquarters in the Jefferson Clinton Commons building located in Syracuse’s Armory Square. The LEED certified project was designed to be both environmentally friendly and aesthetically consistent with the historical character of the neighborhood. Sugarman's space features stained concrete, bamboo flooring and extensive use of recyclable materials such as aluminum and glass throughout. The firm’s team will enjoy fresh air provided by operable windows, natural light offered by a four story clerestory atrium and an onsite fitness center. More details to come.

Sugarman Mourns Loss of Charles Manheim, one of our Firm's Founders.

February 16, 2009 Charles M. Manheim, a prominent Syracuse attorney, died peacefully in his sleep Monday night at his winter home in Delray Beach, Florida. He was one of the founders of the Sugarman Law Firm and had been in practice for more than 60 years, primarily as a trial attorney. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1942 with a B.S. degree. He served in the United States Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946 as a navigator at several airfields around the country. He then attended Syracuse University Law School graduating in 1948 with a J.D. degree. Mr. Manheim was a member of Louis Marshall Law Society; member of Justinian Society; member of Panel American Arbitration Association [Upstate New York Construction Advisory Council]; contributing author to American Institute of Architects, 1972; and master arbitrator of New York State Department of Insurance, No Fault Arbitration. He was a member of the Onondaga County (Member: Grievance Committee 1967-69; Judiciary Committee, 1976-77); New York State and American Bar Associations; Association of Insurance Attorneys; Defense Research Institute, Inc. and American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys. Mr. Manheim was a lecturer with the American Arbitration Association and New York State Bar Association on Insurance Updates. Named as one of the best lawyers in America, Mr. Manheim had been a frequent lecturer and had written many articles on legal issues, specifically those geared toward architects and engineers. He is survived by his wife, June; a son, Gene (Lynn) of Wilton, CT; a daughter, Susan (Andrew Schiff) Manheim Schiff of Boston, MA; grandchildren, Leigh, Emily (Mark) Whipple, Jack and Hannah Schiff. He is also survived by a brother, David of South Deerfield, MA. Contributions may be made to Temple Society of Concord or Syracuse University College of Law. Birnbaum Funeral Service Inc.


Sugarman Mourns Loss of George E. DeMore.

January 28, 2009 George E. DeMore, 66, formerly of Camillus, died unexpectedly on Wednesday in Savannah, Georgia. Born and raised in Syracuse, George and his wife, Kathy, had recently retired to The Landings on Skidaway Island, Savannah, Georgia. A graduate of CBA High School, the College of Holy Cross and Syracuse University College of Law, George was a practicing attorney for 39 years and the managing partner of the Sugarman Law Firm in Syracuse for 25 years. Based upon his long history of success as a trial attorney, George was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1995. In 2005 he was admitted to the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the highest honor a trial attorney can receive as it is selectively limited to the top 500 attorneys in the world. He was a member of Bellevue Country Club for his entire adult life and served as the club's president in 2006. While George was a well-known attorney and trusted advisor to many people, he will be most remembered by his family as a loving and giving husband, father and grandfather. He had a great sense of humor and a compassionate heart as he willingly and quietly helped anyone who requested his assistance. He will be dearly missed by all those who had the privilege and honor to know him. George is survived by his best friend and wife of 41 years, Kathleen (Quigley); and their children, Sarah (Michael) Churchill and Paul (Marcie), both of Charlotte, NC, and Timothy (Margaret) of Syracuse; sister, Eleanor (Joe) McAvoy of Lake Placid; brother, Robert (Anne) of Fabius; and grandchildren, whom he loved dearly and would brag about on a daily basis, Will, Claire, Kate, George, Charlie, Megan, Teddy and Lucy. Laura Spring Named Partner at Sugarman Law Firm

Sugarman Law Firm, LLP, announced today that Laura L. Spring has joined the firm as a Partner concentrating in labor and employment law.

Ms. Spring has extensive experience litigating an array of matters including insurance defense, human rights disputes and sexual harassment and discrimination claims. She has provided strategic counsel for clients negotiating the rugged terrain of employment policies and practices, from implementation to the reading of federal and state labor laws.

Her hire is integral to the firm’s efforts to enhance its services in the area of employment law. “Ms. Spring’s deft handling of complex issues of employment brings the expertise necessary to head up this growing practice area for the firm—and will augment our existing strengths in the representation of business owners and professionals,” said Sam Vulcano, Managing Partner, Sugarman Law Firm.

Her expertise in employment and administrative policy ranges from benefits and retirement policies to breach of contract and discrimination cases, from termination and grievance procedures to health and safety in the workplace. For 20 years she has been a successful advocate for both employers and employees in federal and state court litigation and in administrative hearings. A graduate of the Pace University School of Law, Ms. Spring is admitted to practice in New York and Connecticut. She lectures widely on employment-related topics.

“Whether it’s a business of 500 people or five, how you handle employment policies and employee complaints has a significant impact on its success,” Spring says. “At Sugarman, I hope to continue to develop an exceptional level of responsive and dedicated legal service,” she adds.

Ms. Spring is active in many civic and philanthropic organizations including Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (WISE), the Women’s Bar Association and the Syracuse Symphony Association. She also serves on the board of the Women’s Fund of Central New York, the Fayetteville Free Library and St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary Board.

Sam Elbadawi will speak about premises liability claims at the New York State Bar Association's Basic Tort and Insurance Law Practice seminar on May 20, 2008 at the Sheraton University Hotel & Conference Center in Syracuse. Elbadawi has addressed the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers and frequently lectures on legal issues.

Vanderlyke Speaks on Freedom of Information Law to Society of Professional Journalists

Amy Vanderlyke recently spoke as a guest lecturer about Freedom of Information Law at SUNY Oswego. Vanderlyke addressed the campus's chapter of Society of Professional Journalists in honor of Sunshine Week, a national initiative to provide public awareness about the importance of open government and freedom of information.

Sparkes to serve as panelist at Women's Health Symposium

Jim Sparkes was asked by Congressman Walsh to serve as one of four panelists, together with the Director of the Centers for Disease Control, Dr. Julie Gerberding, at the first annual Women's Health Symposium on November 10, 2007. The goal of the event is to bring together area health professionals to discuss the importance of health, disease prevention and treatment, and overall wellness.

Over 500 people attended the 2007 Sugarman Law Firm Wish ball on October 20 raising over $85,000. The annual event, which is the major fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of CNY, was chaired by Sugarman's own Heather Berry.

A group of 70 design professionals gathered on September 21 for a presentation on the soon to be released 2007 edition of the American Institute of Architect's form contracts. The seminar was presented by Sugarman's Matt Gumaer and Sam Vulcano who are accredited by the AIA as continuing education providers for the design professional community. A similar program will be presented by Brian Sutter of Sugarman's Buffalo office to the AIA Buffalo chapter in mid-October. Sugarman and Doubledays raise over $3000 for Make-A-Wish

Sugarman Law Firm would like to extend a giant thank you to the Auburn Doubledays and their outstanding fans for their season-long support of our efforts to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children suffering from life-threatening medical conditions. Our Make-A-Wish fundraising efforts took place at every Wednesday home game and at two playoff games. The Doubledays rolled out the red carpet for our Wish child guests at each game. The kids practiced with the team, toured the club house, received autographs and gifts and threw out first pitches. And fans of all ages reached deep and often into their pockets to enthusiastically contribute to the cause to the tune of $2,253.31. As a show of gratitude, Sugarman contributed an additional $1,000.00 to that total. Sugarman Law Firm and its employees have been actively involved with Make-Wish Foundation for a number of years as board and committee members, presenting sponsor of the Sugarman Law Firm Wish Ball and bringing this wish to our community is our next goal. Again, thank you to the Doubledays and their outstanding fans. Together, we are bringing hope, strength and joy to a child, right here in Cayuga County!

100 Holes raises over $90,000 for McMahon Ryan

This years "100 Holes for Kids" was a smashing success raising over $90,000 for the McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Site, a local facility that provides a private, child-friendly setting to facilitate advocacy on behalf of physically and sexually abused children. Sugarman Law Firm is the presenting sponsor for the event. Additionally, several of our employees volunteered at the day-long tournament to assist the 17 golfers who play 100 holes of golf in a day in exchange for the pledges of support from their many sponsors.

Paul Mullin to speak on depostions

The Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section and the Committee on Continuing Legal Education have asked Paul Mullin to participate in and lecture at a seminar on the basics of taking and defending depositions in tort and personal injury cases. The seminar will explore how to prepare for the deposition, how to depose a witness confidently, how to avoid common pitfalls, and how to use a deposition to your client's advantage at trial. Sugarman "Chucks a Puck" for Make-A-Wish.

Several of our attorneys, paralegals and staff served as "hawkers" during a recent Syracuse Crunch hockey game selling hockey pucks to raise money for Make-A-Wish of Central New York. Purcahsers of the pucks were invited to "chuck them" on to the ice during intermission and a prize was awarded to the person whose puck ended up closest to center ice. Danielle M. Fogel joins Sugarman

Heather Berry, a paralegal specializing in matters involving architects and engineers, has been named co-chairperson of the Sugarman Law Firm Wish Ball 2007. The event, which is Make-A-Wish of CNY's major annual fundraising event, raised over $90,000 in 2006.

Elbadawi Settles Product Liability Claim for 1.15 Million

Sam A. Elbadawi, a partner in Sugarman Law Firm's Plaintiff's Personal Injury Department, recently settled a claim against the manufacturer of an allegedly defective commercial dryer and the company which owned the dryer. The case involved a 64 year old woman who noticed sheets dangling out of a dryer at her place of employment. As she attempted to place the sheets into the dryer (which she incorrectly thought was stopped), the sheets wrapped around her arm causing arm fractures and nerve damage. The claim alleged that the dryer's safety mechanism, which was designed to stop the dryer when the dryer's door was open, was defective and that the owner of the dryer failed to properly maintain and/or repair the dryer.

Sugarman Law Firm is proud to announce the addition of associate Rebecca Crance. Rebecca is a graduate of the Syracuse University College of Law. Rebecca Crance will specialize in motions and appeals and was formerly an associate at the the Law Offices of John Cirando.

Pesarchick and Vulcano attend PLUS conference

Steve Pesarchick and Sam Vulcano attended the Professional Liablility Underwriters Society's annual conference in Chicago from November 8-10. The conference focused on topical issues related to the liability of architects, engineers, doctors, hospitals, lawyers and other professionals.

Kevin Hunt speaks on Labor Law

A capacity crowd attended the November luncheon meeting at Widewaters to hear the latest on Labor Law Reform. Kevin Hunt, a partner with Sugarman Law firm, with offices in Buffalo, Syracuse and Auburn, reviewed a number of local and regional cases related to Labor Law sections 240 and 241. In his presentation, Kevin noted that the courts have recently been a bit more liberal in their interpretation of 240 and 241, but this section of the Labor Law still creates significant difficulties for insurers.

Sparkes Addresses Business Leaders at Health Care Conference

James E. Sparkes, Esq., Partner and CoChair of the Corporate and Commercial Real Estate Departments, Sugarman Law Firm, LLP , recently spoke at the Controlling Corporate Health-Care Costs Conference, addressing the topic of "Legal Implications Associated With Consumer Driven Health Plans." The event, held at the Wyndham at Carrier Circle, was attended by 400 area business leaders. Sparkes, a graduate of Syracuse University College of Law, The Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, and Holy Cross College, specializes in business formation, governance, mergers and acquisitions, commercial real estate development, finance and corporate healthcare matters. He is a member of the National Health Lawyers Association, the ABA, NYSBA and Onondaga County Bar Association. He lives in the town of Onondaga with his wife, Karen. Sugarman Law Wish Ball 2006 Smashing Success

The 2006 Sugarman Law Firm Wish Ball successfully served its purpose as the major annual fundraiser for Make-A-Wish of CNY. Over 500 attended the event at the Turning Stone Resort at which Jim and Juli Boeheim and Dellas Graphics were honored for their dedication to Make-A-Wish. Make-A-Wish is dedicated to granting special wishes to children under the age 18 who are living with life-threatening medical conditions in order to enrich their human experience with hope, strength and joy. The Sugarman Law Firm would like to extend a special thanks to our many generous friends who contributed so many wonderful items to the silent auction and basket raffle both of which were important parts of the fundraising effort. Kevin Van Duser named to 40 under 40

Kevin Van Duser, a partner at the Sugarman Law Firm, was named one of the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce's "40 under 40" for 2006. Van Duser who hasbeen with the Sugarman Law Firm since 1998 is a graduate of the Syracuse University of Law and Bradley University where he earned as Bachelor of Science in International Business and Finance. Kevin's practice includes commercial and civil litigation.
